Naming things is genuinely one of my favorite hobbies, which is why I’ve now written approximately nine posts about it and will not be stopping.
But an Etsy shop name is higher stakes than naming your apartment because you can’t change your mind about this one with a new sign and an afternoon.
It’s your URL, it’s what repeat customers type in to find you again, and Etsy limits how many times you’re allowed to swap it.
Here’s the part that catches people out. Etsy has rules. Your shop name has to be between four and twenty characters, no spaces, no punctuation, no ampersands, no accents, and no name that’s already in use.

So every gorgeous three-word name you’ve been writing in your notes app is probably not going to work as written, and you’ll find that out at the worst possible time, which is right when you’re finally ready to open.
So let’s do this properly!
Rules first, then how to check availability in about thirty seconds, then 100 Etsy shop name ideas sorted by vibe: cute, unique, catchy, funny, minimalist, botanical, vintage, and a whole section for anyone selling digital products or printables.
There’s a bit at the end about name generators too, and whether they earn their reputation. (Short version: sort of.)
Does Your Etsy Shop Name Actually Matter?
Yes, but probably less than the amount of sleep you’re about to lose over it.
Your shop name will not make or break your sales.
Etsy’s search runs on listing titles, tags, and attributes, so a buyer looking for a ceramic mug finds your ceramic mug because you called it a ceramic mug, not because your shop is called something clever.

Plenty of enormously successful shops have names that mean nothing at all.
What your name does do is quieter. It sets the tone before anyone reads a word of your product description.
It’s the thing people try to remember when they want to find you again.

It goes on your packaging, your business cards if you make them, your Instagram handle, and eventually your domain.
A name that’s easy to say out loud and easy to spell after hearing it once is doing real work for you, and a name that requires clarification every single time is doing the opposite.
So, it matters enough to think about for an afternoon.
Does not matter enough to delay opening your shop by three weeks. (I say this with love, and also from experience with a completely different kind of project.)
Etsy’s Shop Name Rules (Read This Before You Fall in Love With Something)
These are the constraints, and they’re stricter than most people expect:
- Four to twenty characters. That’s it. Short names get rejected, long ones get rejected, and “TheLittleVintageHomeCompany” is not happening.
- No spaces. Your name has to run together as one string. CamelCase is your friend here, because Etsy displays it as one word, but capital letters make it readable.
- No punctuation of any kind. No apostrophes, no hyphens, no periods, no ampersands. So “Sage & Sparrow” becomes “SageAndSparrow” and you’ll want to check the character count again after you spell out the “and.”
- Letters and numbers only. No accented characters, no symbols, no emoji.
- It has to be unique. If another seller has it, you can’t have it, even if their shop has been inactive since 2015.
- No trademark infringement. More on this below, but do not name your shop after a brand, a character, or a band. Etsy will shut it down, and they will NOT be sorry about it.
One more thing worth knowing before you commit: you can change your shop name later, but not infinitely.
Etsy lets you change it freely before your first sale, and after that you get a limited number of changes before the platform requires a review.
So the name you open with is closer to permanent than you might assume.

How to Check Etsy Shop Name Availability
Thirty seconds, three steps.
Step one: search Etsy directly. Type etsy.com/shop/YourNameHere straight into your browser bar. If you get a shop, it’s taken. If you get an error page, you’re probably clear. This is faster than searching within Etsy, which will show you fuzzy matches and make you sad for no reason.
Step two: check the handle and the domain at the same time. Even if you’re not planning a website yet, future you will want one. Check Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok for the handle, and run the .com through any domain registrar. Finding out later that your shop name is a taken Instagram handle is a small, annoying paper cut you can avoid right now.
Step three: search the US trademark database. Free, takes a minute, and it’s the step nearly everyone skips. Search the exact phrase in the USPTO’s TESS database. You’re looking for a registered mark in a similar category, not just any use of the words. If something comes up, pick a different name. Rebranding a shop with 300 sales is significantly worse than picking a second-favorite name today.
Now, the fun part.

A genuine warning before you scroll: a funny name is a commitment. It’s charming for the first year, and then you’re explaining the joke in a wholesale email to a stockist who did not find it funny. Choose accordingly. (I still think some of these are worth it.)

How to Pick a Good Etsy Shop Name You Won’t Regret
You’ve got a shortlist. Here’s how to narrow it without spiraling.
Say it out loud to another person. Not in your head. Out loud, to someone who is not currently thinking about Etsy. If they ask you to repeat it or spell it, that’s data.
Leave room to grow. If you name your shop CandleCornerCo and then discover you actually love making ceramics, you’ve boxed yourself in. Product-specific names are clearer in the short term and limiting in the long term. Something suggestive of a mood rather than an item ages better.
Check how it looks in a URL. Your shop lives at etsy.com/shop/YourName, all run together. Some names that read beautifully with capital letters turn into a completely different word in lowercase. This has happened to people. It will keep happening to people.
Sleep on the top two. Not three weeks. One night. If you wake up still liking it, go.
Then open the shop. Perfectionism about the name is one of the most effective ways to never actually start, and a decent name on a live shop beats a perfect name on a shop you’ve been meaning to open since March.
Are Etsy Shop Name Generators Worth It?
Sort of, with an asterisk.
What they’re good at: volume.
If you’re staring at a blank page, feeding a generator two or three words about what you make will spit out fifty combinations in a second, and one of them might unstick your brain.
Used as a brainstorming prompt, they’re fine.
What they’re bad at: everything else.
Generators don’t check Etsy’s character limits, so they’ll happily suggest something twenty-eight characters long.
They don’t check availability, so the good ones are almost always taken. They don’t check trademarks at all.
And they’re pulling from the same word pool everyone else’s generator is pulling from, which is why “Rustic” plus “Haven” plus “Co” appears roughly nine hundred times across the platform.
Use one to get moving, then edit heavily and check everything yourself. The name is worth twenty minutes of your own attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, though not without limits. Before your first sale you can change it freely.
After that, Etsy allows a set number of changes, and beyond that a name change goes to review. Treat your opening name as a decision, not a placeholder.
Not quite, and this one has changed. Since 2024, Etsy charges a one-time, non-refundable shop set-up fee to many new sellers, typically somewhere between $15 and $29 depending on your location and account.
It isn’t charged to everyone, and Etsy shows you the exact amount (or its absence) before you finish setting up, so you won’t be surprised by it. Plenty of older articles still say opening a shop is free. They’re out of date.
After that, the running costs are: $0.20 per listing, which lasts four months or until the item sells, a 6.5% transaction fee on the total including shipping, and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25 on US sales.
There’s no monthly subscription to keep a basic shop open. Offsite Ads can also take a cut when a sale comes through one, so read that section of the fee schedule properly before you price anything.
For most new sellers, no, not immediately.
Trademark registration costs money and takes months, and it only makes sense once you’ve got a name you’re committed to and revenue worth protecting.
What you should do on day one is the free version: search the trademark database to make sure you’re not infringing on someone else’s. That’s the part that can actually cost you your shop.
(I’m not a lawyer, and if you’re building something substantial, it’s worth asking one.)
First, work out why. If another Etsy seller simply got there first, you’ve got options. If the name is a registered trademark, you need a different name entirely, and no amount of tinkering fixes that.
For the ordinary version, the fixes that work: swap one word for a synonym (Sparrow becomes Wren), drop or add “The” at the front, or change the connecting word (And to An to nothing at all).
Adding “Co,” “Shop,” or “Studio” works too, but check your character count first, since a sixteen-letter name plus “Studio” blows past Etsy’s twenty-character limit.
What I’d avoid: numbers, deliberate misspellings, and anything that makes you nearly identical to the existing shop. You do not want to spend the next three years being mistaken for someone else, and a shop name that’s one letter off another seller’s is a customer service problem waiting to happen.
Worth knowing: a name held by a closed or inactive shop is still gone. Etsy doesn’t release them, and there’s no waiting list.
Barely. Etsy’s search algorithm weights listing titles, tags, attributes, and shop performance far more heavily.
A keyword in your shop name is a very small signal. Put your energy into your listing titles instead.
Still in a naming mood? I have opinions about cottage names, cabin names, and Airbnb name ideas too, and if you’re building something to sell alongside the shop, here are spring cakes you can make and sell.
